Everyone can design, because everyone is a creator
WARNING: Incoming barrage of quotes from “The Creative Act: A Way of Being” by Rick Rubin
Creativity is a fundamental aspect of being human. It’s our birthright. And it’s for all of us.

If you have worked with UI/UX design or designers, then you will have come across the following Visual Design Elements:
- Color – make elements pop and help you know what to tap
- Typography – different styles of letters that make reading easier
- Imagery – make things easier to explain
- Layout – how everything is arranged so you can find things easily
- Spacing – keeps things from looking cramped
- Shapes – make things easy to touch and distinguish
- Lines – helps create clear separation of elements
- Texture – adds another sensory dimension
- Scale – making important stuff big and less important stuff small
- Motion – creates context for the action and makes things come alive
I cover more about these topics in The Art of Apps
As you can see, each one has a part to play with regards to the app’s design
There are said rules about each of these elements like for example in Color. Do not use a black text in a black background (duh? haha)
But if you’re trying to
hide it! (if you see this, then good job!)
Then break the rules!
The rules artists learn are different, they are assumptions not absolutes.

. . . and they are only of value as long as they are helpful. They are not laws of nature.
I use Mobbin to search for design inspirations
Kindle Scribe to doodle wireframes (though I wish I have an iPad for this ๐)
and Figma (the industry standard) to create high-fidelity mockups (though I have also tried to explore Figma alternatives)
BONUS if you’re a Software Engineer: you can explore the technical challenges of a particular design while also playing with transitions, gestures, accessibility, and haptics – then redesign based from your findings
If we are aiming to create work thatโs exceptional, most rules donโt apply.

So I have set out on a journey to break and reinvent how we interact with our calendars (a.k.a. our time)
I can’t reveal much yet, but hopefully soon
