Did Apple just kill a bunch of AI startups?
When I first worked with generative AI, I was blown away ๐คฏ
At the same time, I was thinking, what if it all happens on-device?
no generation cost, no server cost, no internet required, low latency. Uhhhh~ that’s sweeet! ๐
Today, Apple just made that happen with Apple Intelligence, or AI, or ๏ฃฟi ๐คฃ
And by integrating it to the OS itself, it became much more powerful. More powerful than its short-term memory, context unaware, non-action model counterparts
So this rendered a lot of AI startups obsolete (joining the Rabbit R1 and the Humane AI pin ๐)
Maybe these startups already saw it coming? Adding a face or body to an already existing AI model doesn’t really scream much of a long-term play (there’s not a lot of differentiation or innovation)
So it’s interesting to see how this goes. How are they going to pivot? what kind of startups will survive? will this foster more unique kinds of apps? or will this kill the app ecosystem entirely?
Personally, I think the apps are here to stay. They will just be more connected, more seamless, more integrated with the platform itself.
Apps will not just live in their isolated icon island, but also in the dynamic island, control center, live activities, action button, widgets, search, shortcuts, Siri, etc. (these are already happening btw)
Or I could just be an app developer being biased that apps are still the future ๐
Anyway, as for me โ the Apple drop is actually the great news I’ve long been waiting for! I have been conceptualizing the app with the premise of an on-device AI (and a backup plan of off-device AI)
WWDC24 presented us with a lot of shiny new cool stuff, and I canโt wait to start learning and building with them
Now that all the cards have been laid out, it’s time to start exploring the latest developer betas and finalizing the infrastructure of my app
20 days left โ Let’s go!
